Kay Hooghoudt

Kay joined Atos in 2007 as Account Director for Education in the Netherlands. Since 2011 he has broadened his role as Head of Global Strategy & Business Development Education & Public Administration. Kay has a clear vision on Technology in the public sector, in particular in Education. Amongst others he has introduced the Olympic Games as a unique business case in Higher Education including visiting in 2010 Vancouver , Canada with Executive Board members during the Winter Games and also in a recent pre-Olympic Visit to London 2012. He has designed a new clear strategy and position for Atos in Education and positioned a vast network at Boardroom level. Developing strategies for Executives how to use Technology enabling them to withstand challenges they face in present fast moving world. He believes in new Technology like Cloud that can connect The New Generation , giving an answer to consumerization, globalization, cost pressure and profiling Universities, Business Schools and K12. Kay has a long track record in Government Services, with over 15 years in senior management positions. He has a vast experience in developing national and international strategies and sharing best-practices in implementing (EU) policies. Kay (1962) is father of 4 kids and is living in Leiden, the Netherlands. He has his educational background in International Law (LLM) and Anthropology at the University of Leiden.

The need for Social Collaboration in the classroom

Back in January, I presented a keynote at the BETT Conference in London. Presenting to a full room of higher education decision makers, I explained my thoughts on the future of education and technology. During the question and answer session, one area which attracted special interest was our social collaboration offering and its value in the classroom. I personally believe this type of communication flow is the only way forward for educational establishments, and here is why.

Even today whilst we are experiencing an evolution in education, it is still common place for many classrooms to feature a ‘traditional’ layout, with tables in multiple rows and students taught via whiteboards and books. But is this now outdated? In my opinion, this is beyond doubt. There are more forward thinking approaches to schooling students than in this impractical and illogical way, which dates right back to the 19th century. read more

Education, a new frontier

The world of education is evolving. Books and chalkboards no longer dominate the teacher’s toolkit, nor do students simply sit in the classroom and just listen to the teacher or professor, as they have been doing for decades. Instead, the 21st Century education model requires a different approach and while this will in turn lead to both challenges and new opportunities on a massive scale, it is safe to say that the sector as a whole will never be the same again. read more

Flipped learning: Future-proofing IT for Students

As the number of students with access to the state-of the-art technology in their school or college steadily increases, it becomes more apparent that ‘flipped learning’ is fast becoming the teaching style of choice. Different to conventional learning, ‘flipped learning’ takes advantage of the digital based classroom of the 21st century and encourages students to instead learn new material or tasks at home, often in the form of online lectures, leaving all important classroom time for interaction, discussion and debate. read more
