Recovery or archive big data – no ambiguity please!
It’s happened again. A customer, under pressure to comply with new regulations has, asked us to retain all their backup tapes for 7 years. Even in the old world of tape this makes little sense – think of the problems if it was ever necessary to search for some data from 7 years ago.
- Can the tapes be mounted (being older generation of tape cartridge)?
- Are the tapes readable?
- Can the application that created the data still be executed on currents servers?
..and all of this before tackling the challenge of searching hundreds of tapes for the right piece of data.
And the silly thing is that the data may well not be there! If the key data had been created and then deleted between successive backups then it would never have made it onto a tape. Just think how … Continue reading …
