The future of the desktop

Ask about the future of the desktop and you’ll get some fairly confident responses. ‘Virtual desktop is the way forward’ will be followed by ‘Skip Vista for Windows 7′ and in between nods of agreement will come the subject of Webtops and how huge Cloud Computing will be. Someone will mention that the performance desktop is here to stay and another will insist that security will shape the future. So amidst a barrage of these and other prophecies, what factors are most likely to influence how the desktop presents itself in the future for the business customer?

It’s fair to say that how much one cares about desktop futures depends on where they are right now, whether as a ‘mere’ user or in trying to fulfil a role that involves the desktop arena in their business. Would investing in the forefront of technology be too risky, or is not being prepared a fearful situation that may creep up one day? Perhaps some are confidently adapting now or able to wait and observe – for a while at least. Many will see tighter budgets and witness their desktops ageing, labelled as old and branded the legacy term that is often associated with higher maintenance costs, compatibility issues and shrinking vendor support.

So what areas would affect you?  If you don’t want to trawl through pages of technology topics, this article provides a snapshot of the key areas that are likely to have a stronger influence on the future of the desktop….

The Adaptive Desktop – Adapting the Business, written by James Han, a Consultant from the Professional Services team within Managed Operations, and published in the National Computing Centre’s IT adviser magazine, aims to answer this very question.

Great article, sums up furture desktop fronts for businesses. Also an easy tick in the box for “green computing”.

As mobile internet broadband becomes more popular, organisations will begin to turn towards centralised computing whereby employees can have secure access to their data, anywhere, anytime. It is apparent that thin clients such VMware View or Citrix XenDesktop are options through which a significant reduction in desktop total cost of ownership can be realised.
